About Our Program

The HIV/AIDS Service of the Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc. is a comprehensive HIV/AIDS program offering multiple services that are accessible to Asian Americans with limited English proficiency in New York.

The program provides a spectrum of HIV/AIDS related services to the general community through outreach, prevention education, program development, and community networking.

For individuals infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, we provide client support services to meet their needs, including counseling, support group, and case management.

Service Components:

Prevention/ Outreach Education:

We provide various types of workshops and presentations to people of all ages in the community.

The workshops and presentations are conducted in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Facts about HIV and AIDS
  • Sexuality
  • HIV and STIs
  • Important News for Mothers and Newborns
  • Men having sex with Men (MSM)
  • Symptoms and Sickness
  • HIV Reporting and Partner Notification
  • Safer Sex
  • Prevention and Risk Reduction
  • Entitlements
  • Cultural Competency and Adversity
  • Negotiation and Communication Skills

Mass Media Presentations:

Our education outreach team conducts frequent radio presentations at various community broadcasting stations.

We have produced 4 educational videos on HIV/AIDS that are linguistically appropriate and culturally relevant to the community.

Each video is focused on a specific population, namely, the general public, women, adolescents and MSM.

In addition, we contribute a weekly column on HIV/AIDS and STIs to a local Chinese newspaper and periodical that is widely circulated in the community.

Case Management and Client Support Services:

For people living with HIV/AIDS in their families, our bilingual case managers provide assistance in:

  • Obtaining medical treatment regardless of immigration status
  • Applying to public assistance, Medicaid, DASIS, ADAP, ADAP Plus, and other entitlements
  • Coordination for additional related services

We also provide crisis intervention, one-on-one counseling, support groups service, and escort translation services to clients who want to get tested for HIV and/or STI in hospital or clinics we have direct linkage.

Other important aspects provided by our case managers to our clients include updated information on HIV/AIDS; harm and risk reduction skills for those who are at risk, infected or affected; and advice on medical adherence treatment.

Volunteer Program:

We are operating a volunteer program which provides an opportunity for community members to help enhance our services while learning new skills. We welcome people of all ages to join our volunteer program.

Hotline:

Our hotline (212-941-7992) provides community members an anonymous and convenient way to access our services, such as one-on-one counseling, information and referrals. The hotline is staffed during office hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Resource:

We have books, literature, condoms, videos, and audio tapes available at our resource center. People who are interested are welcome to make use of our resource center.
