December 1, 2006 - World AIDS Day - "Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise"
As we embark on this year's World AIDS Day, we are asked to "Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise", the theme of 2006. Yet how is such a daunting task to be accomplished? It's been over two decades since the first symptoms of what is now known as the HIV virus first appeared in the United States, and the world has been trying to gain ground on the fight ever since. As there still exists no known cure for HIV, what do we - as everyday citizens - do to stop the spread of AIDS? The fight begins in the word of knowledge. We must understand HIV, the cause of AIDS, and come to know how it is passed from person to person. We take this to others, who hopefully take it to even more people as well. We remove the stigma that comes with the words "HIV" and "AIDS", and embrace those battling the affliction instead of shunning them out of fear. We live by this knowledge. We stay vigilant in the actions of safer sex practice in stopping the disease from spreading further. We acknowledge that no person is immune to contracting HIV, and do our best to keep those we know from contracting it as well. We realize that ultimately, we are the source of the cure.

Please join the Chinese-American Planning Council, HIV/AIDS Services on December 1st, 2006 at their new offices at 165 Eldridge Street, as we recognize the World AIDS Day through our announcement of a new initiative in collaboration with Beth Israel in targeting underserved Chinese communities for HIV testing. For further information, please contact Sumon Chin, Program Director at (646) 613-8420 ext. 210.
