ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
In 2005, the Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc. (CPC) initiated a project entitled Healthy Youth, Healthy Future to deliver a broad spectrum of program services to the Asian & Pacific Islander (A&PI) youth, families, and communities. The services, tailored with a holistic approach towards public health, include educational workshops, activities-based programs, mentoring, and community outreach.
The Healthy Youth, Healthy Future project aims to inspire A&PI youth to delay the onset of sex to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) transmission, teen pregnancy, and the related social, emotional, psychological and health issues while emphasizing positive youth development. Its mission is to empower youth in the community to achieve their maximum potential in life.
Youth Development Education
The goal of this service component is to help youth develop a positive orientation toward the future and provide important information, tools, and resources on how to improve the well-being and life outcomes of youth. We offer various types of curriculum-based workshops and presentations to A&PI youth, their families, and communities. The workshops and presentations are designed to enhance their communication, decision-making, cultural competency, cognitive, and life functional skills while at the same time reduce risky behaviors.
They are conducted in English, Cantonese, and/or Mandarin. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Why Choose Abstinence
- Dating Standards
- Examining Consequences
- Refusals
- My Life¡¦s Dreams
- My Dream Self
- Communication Styles
- Myth or Fact?
- Meeting My Personal Needs
- Presentation Skills
- Peer Education ¡V Behavior Change
Youth Sports Institute
The goal of this service component is to help youth develop a network of social relationships, self-discipline, self-confidence, and healthier minds and bodies through physical exercise.
We offer various types of sports participation opportunities for A&PI youth in the community. Our programs synthesize elements of sportsmanship with character education, leadership skills development, academics, and/or other enrichment themes.
Peer Education and Mentoring
The goal of this service component is to help the target population build on their individual strengths through structured activities that improve self-awareness, build positive environmental support systems, and increase valuable life skills.
We offer Male-Only Space, Women¡¦s Space, Life-Function, Tutorial, Mentoring, and Support Group services and workshops to A&PI youth and teen parents. Youth leaders are recruited and trained to become peer educators and mentors.
Community Outreach/Awareness
The goal of this service component is to sensitize and educate the community about its specific needs to promote the delay for onset of sexual activity among adolescents, and benefits of positive youth development in this endeavor.
We forge partnerships, alliances, and coalitions with other youth-based organizations to better serve and reach out to A&PI youth in the community.
Furthermore, we organize and/or participate in community events to promote our program services, and offer useful information, tools, and resources to youth, their families, and communities.
Our staff members conduct regular radio presentations at various community broad casting stations. We also contribute scholarly articles on youth topics to local Chinese newspapers and periodicals that are widely circulated in the community.
Volunteer Opportunities
We offer innovative volunteer opportunities within the different service components that foster personal growth, development and satisfaction. Volunteer opportunities are available for community members who are dependable and able to commit to at least three hours of service per week. As a volunteer, you become a member of the CPC family and support program services that benefit A&PI youth, families, and communities.
